HydraFacial vs. Traditional Facial: Which One Your Skin Actually Needs

I get this question probably three times a week: "Should I just get the HydraFacial, or is a regular facial better for me?" And honestly? My answer is always "it depends," which I know is the most annoying thing an esthetician can say. So let's actually dig into it.

What a HydraFacial Really Does

A HydraFacial is a machine-based treatment — it cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates your skin all in one pass using a vortex tip and a serum that's suited to your skin's needs that day. It's satisfying in a very literal way; you can see the gunk it pulls out. If you want visible, immediate glow with zero downtime before an event, this is usually my go-to recommendation.

What a Traditional (Custom) Facial Really Does

A traditional facial is hands-on. It's me, my fingers, a double cleanse, a proper skin analysis, extractions done by hand, a mask built for what your skin is doing that week, and a lot more face and shoulder massage than a HydraFacial gives you. If your skin has more going on — active breakouts, texture, a stress flare-up — a custom facial lets me adjust in real time in a way a machine can't.

So Which One Should You Book?

  • Book a HydraFacial if: you want quick, visible glow, you have an event in the next few days, or you want consistent hydration with minimal irritation.

  • Book a custom facial if: you have specific concerns (acne, texture, dullness), you want a more relaxing, hands-on experience, or you're newer to professional skincare and want a real analysis.

Honestly, a lot of my regulars alternate between the two depending on the month. There's no wrong answer here, just the right one for what your skin needs right now.
