How Often Should You Really Get a Facial? An Esthetician Weighs In

The internet loves to say "get a facial every 4-6 weeks" like it's a universal rule. It's a fine starting point, but it's not the whole answer — and I'd rather give you the real one.

Why 4-6 Weeks Became the "Standard"

Your skin cell turnover cycle is roughly 28 days, so monthly facials line up with that natural renewal rhythm. That's where the general guideline comes from, and for a lot of people, it's genuinely a good baseline.

But Your Skin Type Changes the Answer

  • Oily or acne-prone skin: Often benefits from more frequent visits — every 3-4 weeks — to stay ahead of congestion and breakouts.

  • Dry or sensitive skin: Can sometimes stretch to every 6-8 weeks, especially if your at-home routine is solid and consistent.

  • Mature skin: Often does well on a monthly rhythm to support collagen stimulation and texture over time.

  • "I just want to maintain, not fix anything" skin: Every 6-8 weeks is usually plenty.

Your Goals Matter More Than a Calendar

If you're actively treating something — hyperpigmentation, active breakouts, texture — more frequent visits in a focused series will get you results faster than spacing them out. If you're in maintenance mode, you can absolutely stretch the timeline without losing progress.

Budget Is a Legitimate Factor Too

I'll never make you feel bad for booking based on what you can afford. A quarterly facial with a great at-home routine in between is still doing real work for your skin. Consistency matters more than frequency.

The Real Answer

There isn't one number that's right for everyone. Come in, let's talk about your skin, your goals, and your life — and I'll give you a realistic plan, not just a generic rule.
