Esthetician vs. Dermatologist: When to See Each for Your Skin

People sometimes apologize to me for asking "dumb" skin questions, and I want to say up front — there are no dumb questions here, just questions that sometimes belong to a different professional. Here's how I think about it.

What an Esthetician Actually Does

I'm trained in skin health, maintenance, and cosmetic treatment — facials, extractions, chemical peels, dermaplaning, lash and brow services. My job is prevention and maintenance: helping your skin look and feel its best, catching issues early, and building a long-term skincare routine and relationship with you.

What a Dermatologist Actually Does

A dermatologist is a medical doctor. They diagnose and treat skin conditions — think persistent cystic acne, suspicious moles, eczema, psoriasis, or anything that needs prescription medication or a biopsy. If something on your skin is painful, rapidly changing, or not responding to consistent at-home care, that's a dermatologist conversation, not an esthetician one.

Where It Overlaps (And Why I'll Tell You to Go)

Part of my job is knowing my scope. If I see something during a facial that looks like it needs medical attention, I will absolutely tell you to see a dermatologist — that's not me passing you off, that's me actually looking out for your skin. In Florida specifically, estheticians aren't permitted to perform certain treatments (like medical-grade microneedling) without a medical director, which is another reason this lane-staying matters.

A Simple Way to Think About It

  • See me for: regular maintenance, glow, hydration, extractions, prevention, building a routine

  • See a dermatologist for: diagnosis, prescriptions, anything changing or concerning, medical-grade treatments

We Can Work Together

A lot of my clients see both of us — a dermatologist for the medical stuff, me for the maintenance and glow in between. That combo is honestly the best version of skin care.
